Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in the form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In more recent years it has gained popularity in the West due to an increasing scientific evidence base on how acupuncture works at a neuro-physiological level. Research suggests the release of chemicals (endorphins, melatonin and serotonin) that relieve pain, encourage sleep and promote well-being respectively, are stimulated when the extremely fine needles are positioned in specific acupuncture points around the body.
Western medical acupuncture combines TCM principles with scientific evidence. It has been shown to provide benefit when used alongside other physiotherapy treatments such as manual therapy and exercise rehabilitation.
There is evidence suggesting positive benefits of acupuncture in pain management of osteoarthritis. Acupuncture has also been demonstrated to alleviate headache and migraine, in addition to pain in pregnancy. Visit www.aacp.org.uk for more information.
